Consumer Price Index (CPI) Release Dates

Note: The Bureau of Labor Statistics "embargoes" the release of Consumer Price Index Inflation Data. In other words, they keep it secret until a specified date so no one will have an unfair advantage by getting the Consumer Price information early.

The table below shows the dates the Consumer Price Index information will be released each month. Note that information is compiled for the previous month i.e. data released mid-February is for the year ending in January.

The CPI is used to calculate the Annual Inflation Rate and the monthly inflation rate. At the same time the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also releases other data including the Core Inflation Rate (which excludes the volatile components of food and energy).

Using the inflation information combined with the Unemployment rate data which is generally released during the first week of the month you can calculate the U.S. Misery Index which is used to estimate the overall health of the economy since a high unemployment rate combined with a high inflation rate can make life quite miserable.  If you wish to use the CPI to calculate the inflation rate the easiest way is to simply plug the dates into our inflation calculator.
